Creating a Tri-fold Brochure in MSPublisher

Open MSPublisher and click on > File > New (or ctrl+N) to open the Publication Wizard.

In the left-hand bar, select > Brochures (4th item from the top) to start your Wizard.

Then click on > Event from the drop-down list. This will give you several pre-designed brochure set-ups to choose from, including Ascent to Slant.

Click on the one you want – do NOT choose one with “special paper” or the Paper Direct logo.

A box pops up with information on automatic fill-in information – click OK. Then when the Personal Information box appears next, just click Cancel since this is a one-time set up.

The wizard will walk you through selecting elements for your brochure, going to each new step when you push the “Continue” button at the bottom of the left pane.

Usually the first choice is Color Scheme, so change that to Black and Gray (near the top of colors list) so you are really seeing what will print out on our Library laser printers. Then be sure that 8.5 by 11 inches is selected for your paper.

When you have made every choice which affects the whole brochure, click “Finish” so that you can change the words and clipart in your brochure. Click on “Hide Wizard” button to give you more room to see your work.

Remember that your brochure will print 2 pages – an outside page with the front and back covers and an inside page with your information. You can glue-stick the pages together or copy them to make a two-sided final product.

To go from one page to the other for editing, just click its tab at the bottom of the screen.

In Publisher, you can move around text boxes and pictures, delete unneeded items, or add new items. Deleting all the text inside a text box is about the same as deleting the text box itself.

To change clip art, double-click on it to open the Insert Clip Art page so you can search – try different words if your first search doesn’t bring up enough choices. When you double-click on a piece of clip art in the Insert Clip Art page, it replaces the one you had in the brochure, but doesn’t close Insert Clip Art. Just click anywhere on your brochure page to bring it out in front so you can continue working.

Our printers will print everything that is at least ½” inch from the outside edges of the page. If you want to see how your brochure will look without the editing boxes around text and pictures, go to the top bar and choose >View > Hide Boundaries and Guides. (Since the boundary lines will not print, it’s usually easier to see what you are working with if you keep View on Show Boundaries and Guides)

Be sure to save your work to your student account on the “H drive” rather than on My Documents so that you can access it from any GHS network computer.

IF this is a class project and IF you use any photos or clipart from the internet, you MUST make a separate Works Cited page to turn in with your brochure! For help in making a citation for webpage, try www.citationmachine.net. If you only use the Microsoft clipart that’s included with Publisher, then you don’t have to make the Works Cited page.
